Sample Answer band 6.5

Nowadays, many countries have tried to develop advanced technologies to solve the lack of food in the world, but many people around the world still go hungry. In my opinion, I think it is because of “Capitalism”.

Under “the World Order” by USA in 1970, the cold war has divided the countries around the world in to 3 groups: 1) the first world like USA, UK, and Japan, 2) the second world like Soviet Union, and 3) the third world like the developing countries. I don’t think the capitalism is bad, but I think it has created many problems such as the lack of food in the poor countries.

According to Economics, the developed countries have an absolute right to take advantage of the human resources in the developing countries with the lowest wage, long working hours, and dangerous working places. Hence, the people who live in the developing countries have no opportunities to improve their welfare. The lowest wage they get is in contrast with the high price of the product that they make. For example, a wage of 1-dollar US per a day for 1 worker in the developing countries, but 100-dollar US per product sold. The gap, approximately 99-dollar US, goes to the company owners who live in the developed countries.

To solve this problem, I think the government on each country should guarantee their citizen basic rights such as food and education. The highest price of food restricts the poor people to access it, so the government need to subsidise the prices so the citizen can afford it. In the long term, the government should give free education for their people because education can improve the economic ability. People who have a high education can work in higher positions with higher salary.

We have to solve this problem together, not just the duty of some countries.

  • The question and sample answer are taken from Cambridge IELTS 13. The original sample received band 6.0, but I have improved the answer in areas of coherence and cohesion, lexical resources, and grammatical range and accuracy. These improvements, I believe, will improve the score to band 6.5.
