Sample Answer band 7.0

In some countries the average weight of people is increasing and their levels of health and fitness are decreasing. I think that the causes of these problems are due to unhealthy lifestyle and the lack of exercise.

Nowadays, people are getting lazier. They want convenience in everything. When they come home from work, they will have microwaved dinner or fast food so that they do not have to prepare a meal or wash the dishes after the dinner. The introduction of fast food is also the main cause of unhealthy lifestyle. People tend to opt for fast food restaurant meals rather than simple homecooked meal. It may be true that burgers and pizzas taste better than homecooked meals, but they contain high level of calories which contribute to weight gain. Eating too much fast food will lead to health problems such as heart disease and diabetes. To solve this problem, people should balance their diet. For example, eating more vegetables and fruits can improve overall fitness and health. Eating less meat and drink plenty of water throughout the day can also help reduce the risk of obesity. Another solution is to organize time with family to take a walk outdoors to enjoy the sceneries rather than staying idle in the house.

Another main cause is the lack of exercise. As people grow older, their metabolism rate drops. Even if they are eating the same amount as before, they will still gain weight. The one and only solution to this is exercise. The recommended exercise per day is at least 30 minutes of brisk walking. This target can be easily achieved if people do not drive to work. They can take a bus or a train and get off one stop earlier and then walk to their office. At home, they can play with their kids or bring their dogs for a walk. It is also less likely for people to get sick if they do plenty of exercise as their body is strong enough to fight off illness and diseases.

  • The question and sample answer are taken from Cambridge IELTS 8. The original sample received band 6.5, but I have improved the answer in areas of coherence and cohesion, lexical resources, and grammatical range and accuracy. These improvements, I believe, will improve the score to band 7.0-7.5.
